How many times recently have you seen an ad like this showing up in your Facebook profile?
Unfortunately for marketers, the fun is over. Facebook sent out the following email today:
Ad quality and user feedback are extremely important to Facebook. We’ve received significant negative feedback about ads that call out users’ personally identifiable information, especially when the information is not directly relevant to the ad’s offer. We take this feedback very seriously and are taking an active role in removing ads that are detrimental to the user experience. Some of your ads have been disabled for this reason.
Please delete any ads using this tactic that may still be running and do not submit new ads that call our user attributes unnecessarily and that are not directly relevant to the offer (including, but not limited to, age, gender, location or interest). This practice is prohibited by Facebook’s Ad Guidelines (http://www.facebook.com/ad_guidelines.php). Advertisers who continually engage in advertising practices that generate strong negative feedback will find that their ads are less likely to be shown to users and may have their ads disabled or face account penalties up to and including the permanent loss of advertising privileges.
Looks like people aren’t appreciating the laser-targeted ad text… Oh well. Back to the drawing board….
What a nightmare it is to advertise with those A-Holes.
I have some landing pages for specific ages and genders for a dating site. I asked for more info after reading that message and they said they won't accept ads calling out user attributes AT ALL. So even if your ad text is relevant for your landing page, they will still reject it if it references any user attributes.
All because they're supposedly getting too much complaints from users. I really hope this hurts their income, so that their board of directors pushes them back in the right direction.
Who wants to join my Fuck Facebook fan page?
the hilarious thing. I just received a 'boat load' of emails from 'gurus' saying that FB is the NEW GOOGLE. I think they ment the new pain in the *ss like GOOGLE is currently NOT the NEW 'wonder' traffic source. Glad I have moved onto other means and networks
DK, I got the same emails today and yesterday for the Deiss program. In his video it talks about FB LOVING affiliates and direct marketers and how easy their platform it to launch new ads… ummmm bullsheet…
~ Corey
@Corey/AffPortal – i am skeptical abt how much Ryan Deiss knows abt FB marketing, aside from paying some ghost writer to author the product.
fb loving affs? like DK says, fb loves giving it to affs up the heinie.
I received this email too in a dating campaign. This is utter BS, but what else would you expect from FB?
cry me a river
I also received this email awhile back…
Pretty stupid if you ask me. Especially since I have read where they say to target as much as possible… but when you do they tell you not to.
Wait a minute— who died and appointed Facebook the almighty internet social moral guardian. This is a bunch of BS. All facebook cares about is keeping their customer base so they can rake in the $$$$$$$$$$$$$.
It's funny that we don't hear fuckface(oops! I meant face book) tell us that they are getting complaints from their sorry whiny users because they DO NOT HAVE TO PAY to use fuckface(there I go again), I mean Face book.
How in the hell do the users think they are getting Face book for free??? Daaaaaa, yes it's from the advertisers paying Facebook( ah! I got it right this time) money so they IN TURN do not have to CHARGE THE USERS.
Maybe Facebook should start charging the users then see how many whiny, griping tight asses come crawling out of the wood work!!
Yea,Yea,Yea, I know that the advertisers are making money, but wasn't that the real reason behind facebooks birthing, or was it an immaculate conception.
Looks like Facebook has a decision to make. Don't start strangling off the blood supply to their FACEbook and let their advertisers make some money so they can in turn pay their advertising fees, or they just need to bite the bulletand ban advertising and start charging its LOYAL FOLLOWERS. I sure would like to be a fly on the wall when that happens.
I am not saying that someone should not monitor intent or demeaner of the advertising since noone wants anyone getting duped or ripped off, but come on a freaking i-Pod.
Maybe I am looking at this through stained glasses since I am an IM
but this comes down to simple economics–If the advertiser are not making money they will leave and I guess FAcebook could then ask for a Washington BAILOUT.. because their townspeople are going to burn down the town before they pay for Facefuck(and I thought I finally had their name straight))
@Jon you have officially posted the longest comment in the history of this blog. Well done sir! Good points all, I couldn't agree with you more. As soon as a traffic source arrives that actually treats its advertisers like the customer instead of the enemy, there will be a shakeup in the IM landscape. Mark my words.
PS- Facebook
Good post and points Jon…
It's funny, last month the philly news did a poll in a cafe talking to a bunch of Facebook users and asked them if FB started charging a subscription what they would think… Almost every one of these A-holes said they would bail and go back to sucky myspace. What a bunch of cheap tight asses, seriously. They have no idea the massive amount of hardware, software and human resources it takes to pull off a service like facebook. So w/o out the ad revenue and with a user base that tight assed about paying for the service, FB "decsioners" are at a cross roads.
Cheap fucks make me mental… when it comes to THEMselves working for free, ohhhhh no… pay me what i'm WORTH for pushing this broom.
If nothing else, there's always PoF ads.
